Veterans Day is commemorated each November 11th as a federal holiday to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans live and work in our communities, and many aging veterans are faced with the challenges of living on their own or looking for affordable long-term care. Veterans hold our history in their hearts and minds and are spectacular resources. The Department of Veteran Affairs ensures that there are health and benefits solutions available to Veterans.
VA Aid and Attendance Benefits and Housebound Allowance
The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs has created a resource for veterans. VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits provide monthly payments added to the amount of a monthly VA pension for qualified Veterans and survivors. If you need help with daily activities, or you’re housebound, find out if you qualify. At Oasis Senior Advisors, we place many veterans who are often unaware of this benefit or if they are eligible.
You may be eligible for Aid and Attendance if you get a VA pension, and you meet at least one of the requirements below:
- You need another person to help you perform daily activities like bathing, feeding, and dressing, OR
- You have to stay in bed or spend a large portion of the Day in bed because of illness OR
- You are a patient in a nursing home due to the loss of mental or physical abilities related to a disability OR
- Even with glasses or contacts, you have only 5/200 or less in both eyes; or concentric contraction of the visual field to five degrees or less.
HELP SAVE AMERICA’S WAR LETTERS
Since November 11th, 1998, the historian and New York Times bestselling author Andrew Carroll has been encouraging Americans to seek out and preserve war-related correspondences from every conflict in U.S. history. Over the past two decades, Americans have shared with Andy and his nonprofit, the Center for American War Letters, an estimated 200,000 correspondences, from handwritten missives penned during the American Revolution up to emails sent from Iraq and Afghanistan.
If you have war-related letters and/or emails to share, please contact Andy directly at WarLetterProject@aol.com. (Originals are preferred, but scans are also gladly appreciated.) And whether you do or do not have correspondences to donate, please help Andy and his Center spread the word about their mission and share this message with others. For more information about the Center, please visit: www.WarLetters.us.
And to listen to free episodes of the podcast, “BEHIND THE LINES: The World’s Greatest Love Letters – and the Stories Behind Them,” that Andy co-hosts with the Emmy-winning journalist Barbara Harrison, visit: www.BehindtheLines.us.
