Looking for love after 65?

February 14, 2019

With much of the country thawing out of a deep freeze and Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we thought we would warm things up with a little romance! Countless seniors will be enjoying the company of that special someone, but many are still looking for love. Signs point to more frequent change in marital status for older Americans. The rate of marriage for U.S. adults over 65 is rising, and so is the divorce rate for U.S. adults over 50. If you’re among those looking for companionship during this season of love, we encourage you to explore some of the most popular ways seniors just like you are finding their Valentines! Dating apps: Think dating apps are just for avocado-toast-eating millennials? Think again! A Pew research study found usage by 55-64-year-olds doubled between 2013-15, and the numbers continue to trend upward. Sites like OurTime, Stitch and SeniorMatch cater to 50-plus singles throughout the country. Whether you’re looking for long-term companionship or someone to join in on daily adventures, these sites might be the perfect place to start. Local Community: For seniors wary of going the online route, traditional ways to meet new people are still popular. Going out with friends to local events, community centers and senior-focused gatherings can bring you in contact with plenty of new people. While this “old-school” method has its share of challenges, it can be a great way to connect with people without feeling out of place. Senior Housing: Senior housing is one of the top new places seniors of all ages are finding companionship. While love is all about the feeling, dating can be a bit of a numbers game, and the numbers are in your favor in senior housing. As many as 90 percent of people in senior living communities identify as single, making these places ripe with new possibilities. There are even senior housing communities that are singles-only. Many senior communities offer social activities that make effective icebreakers. As Cupid’s favorite holiday approaches, we encourage you to seek joy. Looking for the right person can be frustrating, but success after the age of 65 can have an immensely positive impact on your life. So, whether you’re reaching for your laptop, planning a weekend outing or exploring love in your senior living community, know that you’re taking the next step to being HAPPY!
